# Arc 2: Into Avelis

## Sessions Recap

### Session 1

**The Fall and the Aftermath:** The session opens with the party falling from the sky amidst the chaos of Estra's collapse. Axilya clutches Vixen and the goddess, while Cedric and Methe hold onto each other. Methe, wounded by an arrow, is losing blood rapidly. As they plummet, the goddess loses her grip and faints, forcing Axilya to keep hold. Eventually, they all lose sight of each other in the crazy descent.

**Axilya's Ordeal:** Axilya hears the sound of water splashing and realizes they are falling into the ocean. She hits the icy water and begins to sink, seeing the goddess close to her lit up by moonlight, about 50 meters away. Despite her efforts, she starts to drown, her vision going black.

**Cedric and Methe's Struggle:** Cedric and Methe are surrounded by debris and people casting spells to slow their fall. Amidst the chaos, Cedric holds onto Methe, who is bleeding out, as they crash into the ground with a huge explosion of dust. They find themselves in a sandstorm, the sand choking and irritating them. They decide on their next move while dealing with Methe's injury and the limited visibility.

**The Goddess and Axilya:** Axilya wakes up on a rocky cliff, coughing out seawater, with the goddess beside her. The goddess is barely breathing, requiring immediate medical attention. Axilya administers first aid, stabilizing her condition. They are on a small island surrounded by water, with a larger shoreline visible in the distance. Axilya must decide whether to swim around the island to find a safer path down or attempt a risky descent with the goddess.

**Survival and Decisions:** Axilya faces the challenge of navigating the ocean or climbing down the cliff to reach the shoreline. As she swims, the waves grow increasingly rough. Exhausted, she reaches the shore only to see miles of sand ahead. She spots a piece of Estra with figures moving on it in the distance and hears screaming. Among the figures, she recognizes Vixen, who is barely staying above the water.

**Vixen's Plight:** As Axilya swims towards the shoreline, she battles against worsening waves. Exhausted, she reaches the shore and collapses. Looking back at the ocean, she spots Vixen, barely staying afloat, amidst the wreckage of Estra. She also notices figures moving on a piece of Estra, which is slowly sinking. Axilya is faced with a heart-wrenching choice: save Vixen or the Estran survivors, knowing she can only save one in time.

**Choices and Consequences:** Axilya faces a difficult decision: save Vixen or the Estran survivors. The piece of Estra is sinking, and time is of the essence. Meanwhile, Cedric and Methe must confront the Bulette and survive the harsh desert environment.

**Cedric and Methe's Desert Struggle:** Cedric and Methe, after surviving the fall and the sandstorm, find themselves in a perilous situation as the sand shifts beneath them. They witness a young half-elf being devoured by a Bulette, a massive land shark-like creature. This new threat forces them to remain vigilant and ready for combat while dealing with Methe's injury and the unforgiving desert environment.

**Rescue by Orcs:** As the battle reaches a critical point, with Cedric and Methe on the brink of defeat, the sound of a bugling horn signals the arrival of a group of large orcs on sleds. One orc throws a spear at the Bulette, distracting it long enough to save the adventurers. Cedric and Methe lose consciousness as relief sets in.

**Waking Up in the Orc Camp:** Cedric and Methe awaken in an orc camp, surrounded by orc warriors who appear to have saved them. The orcs are cautious but not hostile

**Decisions and Consequences:** Axilya's decision on whom to save—Vixen or the Estran survivors—will have lasting consequences for the party and their future. Meanwhile, Cedric and Methe must confront the Bulette and navigate the harsh desert terrain to find safety and regroup with their companions.

**Backstory and Context:** The session also delves into the lore of Estra and its inhabitants. After the devastation of the world, the gods turned their attention to the last survivors. Thorva, smitten with the goddess, tried to win her favor but was ultimately betrayed and vowed revenge. He created the first Kastra, a creature with a poison capable of killing gods. Though the Kastra was defeated, its poison cursed the goddess, leading her to conceive a child to keep Estra afloat. This child, imbued with the goddess's divinity, ensures Estra's survival.

**Torva's Backstory:** The session also provides crucial backstory on the goddess and her struggle with Torva. After the destruction of the world, the gods focused on the survivors of Estra. Torva, infatuated with the goddess, tried to win her over but was ultimately betrayed and sought revenge. He created the Kastra, a creature capable of poisoning gods. Although the Kastra was defeated, its poison cursed the goddess, leading her to conceive a child to maintain Estra's divinity. This child, carrying the goddess's spirit, would ensure Estra's survival, even as the goddess faced her mortality.

This session emphasizes the themes of survival, sacrifice, and the bond between the party members as they navigate the aftermath of Estra's fall and the challenges ahead.

### Session 2

**Methe and Cedric's Adventure**

**Waking Up in the Orc Camp:** Methe wakes up buried in warm, damp sand that smells horrible but has floral notes. Cedric starts awake, vaguely recalling a dream. They find themselves in a domed tent with an old orc woman pouring a greenish liquid over the sand that covers Methe. The woman speaks in an incomprehensible language, first attempting a language they almost recognize, then switching to a guttural, unfamiliar one. Despite the language barrier, she tries to communicate, showing surprise at their awakening.

**Interaction with the Orcs:** As Methe and Cedric try to move, the old woman leaves and returns with a huge male orc, about 75 feet tall, who drops to his knees, bowing to them with a terrified expression as Cedric tries to cast a spell. The orcs offer loose tunics and gesture for them to follow. Outside, the camp is bustling with orcs harvesting a Bullet, a large beast they recently killed. The orcs appear peaceful, more like a trading caravan than a raiding party. The male orc offers sandals to protect their feet from the hot sand and eventually gestures them to follow him.

**Exploring the Camp:** The male orc seems to be the chief, checking on various tasks around the camp. The old woman, identified as Dokella, herds them back to the tent, where she applies healing salves and potions. She attempts to communicate further, mentioning "Estra" and showing a book with symbols of the old gods, pointing to one identified as Estra. Despite the language barrier, Methe and Cedric manage to gather some understanding of their surroundings and the orcs' reverence for them.

**Journey to the Fallen Library:** The next day, the orcs load their sleds with Bulet spoils and offer goggles to Methe and Cedric for the journey through the desert. As they travel, they spot a crater with a piece of a tower, the top of the library from Estra. Inside the dark, overturned tower, they find books and scrolls scattered, with wisps wandering aimlessly. They discover Luelle pinned under a bookcase, barely breathing, who asks about the goddess before dying. With her death, the wisps begin to fade, marking the end of their presence.

**Collecting Books:** The orcs, start collecting books from the library, showing a deep respect for its contents. They redistribute a sled to carry as many books as possible. Cedric experiences a moment of connection with the white-haired orc, who acknowledges their efforts.

**Continued Journey:** As the sun sets, the orcs continue their journey through the desert, traveling even in the dark. Methe and Cedric feel a sense of directionless travel but prefer it to remaining in the devastated landscape of Estra.

Axilya and the Goddess's Adventure

**Rescuing Vixen and Estran Survivors:** Axilya, on her way to rescue survivors from Estra, sacrifices dozens of Estrans to save Vixen, building a raft for him. She manages to bring the goddess back to the mainland. The next morning, she vividly recalls a dream and sees bodies of Estran survivors washing ashore, some missing limbs or pieces. The goddess, though still unconscious, shows signs of recovery.

**Survival in the Desert:** Axilya and her party face the harsh desert conditions, rolling survival checks to navigate and survive. They take shelter in a piece of rubble from Estra during a lightning storm, finding a tilted room with some furniture.

**Struggles and Dehydration:** The following days are tough, with Axilya's group suffering from starvation and dehydration. Vixen falls into a sand pit, adding to their challenges. The goddess's condition worsens, and the party faces the risk of death from the harsh environment.

**Finding the Oasis:** Late in the day, Axilya spots a green area in the distance, an oasis. They gather kindling and manage to start a fire, taking turns on watch. The next morning, Axilya wakes to find a camel-like creature licking her face. A marketplace has sprung up around them, with diverse races including humans, orcs, elves, and gnomes. The camels continue to investigate the goddess, and Axilya realizes they have encountered a bustling market.

**Goddess Awakens**: The goddess wakes up, confused and weak. She writes "where are we?" in the air with golden light, seeking information from Axilya about their location. This session highlights the diverse challenges faced by the characters in the aftermath of Estra's fall, their interactions with the orcs, and their struggle for survival in an unforgiving desert environment.

**Goddess' Struggle and Vixen's Support:** The goddess, still weak, tries to stand up, wiping away tears. She can't support herself, so Vixen offers to carry her, saying, "My goddess, climb on my back, I will carry you." Initially reluctant, she tries again to stand but ultimately climbs onto his back. She motions to lead the way and, before walking away, she squeezes your hand.

**Scent of Food:** Shops are getting ready, more caravans are arriving, and the market is becoming very busy. The smell of food draws you in, and Vixen runs towards it. As you get closer, people call out, offering various things. A man grabs your hand, speaks, then holds up a hand.

**Food Stall:** You arrive at a food stall with an open canopy and several grills set up. They are grilling kebabs, making little fruit pies, and steaming leaves filled with meats and vegetables. It all smells amazing. When you pay with golden coins, people are shocked.

**Tiefling's Call:** While splitting your spoils, you hear a Tiefling calling people to support a temple from a small stall. She beckons you over.

**Cedric and Methe's Arrival:** Cedric and Methe, exhausted and miserable from their long journey on the sled, see a colorful market surrounding an oasis as they crest a huge dune. The orcs speed up towards the water, causing you to hold onto the sled to avoid bouncing off.

**Orc Sleds:** As the orcs circle their sleds, nearby merchants pack up, casting dirty looks. The orcs unload, and you finally stretch your legs. You notice a heated argument between a big male orc and a white-haired female orc, who stands firm in front of the sled full of books.

**Big Male Orc's Gesture**: The big male orc, frustrated, picks up the enormous jaw bone he gave you earlier, motioning if you want it back. He points at the jaw bone, then at the coins, then to himself, then to you, and back to the coins, looking towards the orcs setting up parts of the Bulet for sale.

**Aggressive Haggling:** People approach the orc caravan cautiously, only the tough ones. Haggling gets aggressive, with one man imitating the orc's chest-banging before giving her money and taking several bones. Someone else inspects your fine jaw bone, offers five fingers, then six after some negotiation. The jaw bone's worth is ten pieces of silver. When you dump out the coinage, it's about the amount of fingers x100.

**Going into the Market:** Methe makes a wisdom check. As you're walking through the market, a little girl takes your hand, leading you to a tent near the rubbish piles. Inside, she hands you a vulture's body. Another wisdom check: You feel déjà vu, break the vulture's neck, speak unfamiliar words, and the vulture speaks, revealing itself as Vionie.

**Vionie's Tale:** Vionie tells about being imprisoned by Torva, needing your help to reclaim her vessel hidden in the mountains. She offers a cloak to hide godly light in exchange for the vessel. The girl gives you a map showing Thorva’s jaws at the mountain's peak. She leads you back to the market, where you regain control of your body.

**Cedric's Perspective:** Methe has been missing for about 20 minutes.

**Meeting up at the market:** When they meet up, the goddess rapidly signs, “Where have you been, are you okay, what happened?”

**Meeting Dashing Dawson:** At the end of the market, you see a halfling man, Dashing Dawson, with a beautiful donkey. He offers various magical items: a scimitar, a lance, a spyglass, red potions, a bag of holding (700), braces (800), a tiara, and a silver collar. Touching an item is a legally binding contract. Failing a haggle results in a wisdom save (DC 15) or being charmed. Stealing from him results in losing all your money. He proposes a deal: bring him the Protector's Blade from Fang Lake or the Braces of the Bull from Long Castle, and he will reveal the location of the tower of Wyvell, who can grant you knowledge, such as understanding unknown languages.

**Leaving the Market:** Dawson reminds you to return with the artifact. When you look back, he's gone.

**Painful Journey:** It's cold, muddy, and rainy, but you finally reach the Farrah Mountains where Torva’s Jaw is located. At the base, a signpost points to Ashborne and the Pilgrims Path.

**Steep Climb:** Halfway up, you encounter two young men, Paulo and Saulamn, with a donkey and a cart containing a body. They introduce themselves and explain the body is Saulamn's brother, a plague victim. They join you for protection. They mention the plague came from Long Castle.

**Paulo and Saulamn’s Reaction:** Seeing your animals, they are shocked and intrigued, asking where you found them. Paulo asks to pet Sparky, and Vixen gets jealous.

**Crossing the Waterfall:** Further up, a huge waterfall blocks the path, where a stream and bridge should be. How do you get across?

**Improvisation:** Make perception checks (10+). You spot large dark birds circling above.

**Twilight Approach:** The path gets slippery and muddy, making it difficult for the donkey. By twilight, you reach the top, where the temple of Iol is located. The mountain top is carved into a statue of Farrah “the guide,” holding a stone door with a silver knocker.

**Approaching the Temple**: Macaques flee, muttering "bad, bad, bad." You reach the door, Paulo knocks, and a rust-skinned Tiefling in grey hooded robes welcomes you. Inside, you see a great stone hall with a roaring fire. Tieflings fly between platforms, carrying books. For once, you feel safe.

### Session 3

Session Overview: The session starts with the party being abruptly awoken as the temple they are in begins to collapse. They spot a massive Torvaic army approaching, led by a mysterious human who is later revealed to be Falen the Betrayer. The party hastily prepares the tieflings for the imminent battle to defend their survival.

**Battle Highlights:** The battle between the Guardians and Torva forces unfolds with both sides trading blows. The Guardians secure an early lead, but the Torvaic forces retaliate, leading to a series of intense skirmishes. Despite the combined efforts of the goddess and the party, Cedric is knocked unconscious twice by Torva’s big bonks. However, he is revived both times, first by the goddess's *Prayer of Healing* and later by Axilya’s *Cure Wounds*. Farrah, appearing on the mountain, saves Cedric from certain death with a bold statement: "I am not afraid of death nor you," before both her and Torva disappear from the battlefield. The Torvaic forces retreat afterward, and the battle ends.

**Post-Battle Events:** After the battle, the party notices a storm brewing in the distance, but they decide it’s not significant enough to worry about. They prepare to journey towards Torva's Jaws, a treacherous mountain range. As they travel, the party faces numerous challenges: they slip down a powdery ridge, navigate a dangerous incline, and encounter a black cloud of screaming birds. Despite their best efforts to avoid detection, the birds notice them, leading to a tense escape. The storm grows stronger as night falls, forcing the party to decide whether to continue or make camp. If they choose to rest, the storm subsides by morning, and they resume their journey towards the ominous peaks.

**Torva’s Jaws and Scouting:** The party finally reaches Torva's Jaws, where the snow turns black upon contact with the ground. Axilya scouts ahead and discovers a large circular grate in the center of the peaks, leading to a hidden stairway. Axilya, in bird form, accidentally triggers the grate and falls inside, where she is captured by two guards discussing the strange appearance of birds in the area. She is taken to the aviary, where she encounters the blöderbirds. The rest of the party "sneaks" into the area, falling through the grate as it opens again. They cautiously explore, eventually finding themselves at a crossroads with multiple paths leading to different parts of the complex.

**Tension and Confrontation:** As Axilya attempts to escape her captors, she raises the alarm, alerting the enemies to the party’s presence. The situation escalates when Torva and Cecilia appear, but Cecilia does not expose the party, even after seeing them. Cedric, attempting to move out, is caught, knocked unconscious, and taken to the torture chamber where he is shackled with cold iron manacles. The party mounts a rescue mission, with Axilya killing a guard to save Methe, who was knocked out during the rescue attempt. The party frees Cedric from his bonds using creative methods and takes the manacles as a souvenir.

**Final Confrontations:** The party continues deeper into the complex, discovering a memorial dedicated to the goddess of conflict. They proceed towards the general's quarters, where they ruthlessly kill the general and head downstairs. They encounter Artie, the record holder and butler of Torva and his children, who offers to assist them. However, the session ends on a cliffhanger as Falen arrives He kidnaps Axilya and gives the party an ultimatium: “Find my sister and you’ll get her back." Falen then pushes Axilya into a locked room as the rest of the party scrambles to find a way to rescue her.

### Session 4

**Vault (Torva's Jaws):** The party explores an impossibly vast vault, filled with treasures collected by Torva since the beginning of time. Each item is displayed on platforms, with numbers engraved alongside cryptic three-letter suffixes. They use a guidebook, provided by Artie (the robot butler), to locate a terrifying shapeshifter creature labeled "5122 FAC." This creature, resembling tar in human form, is chained and adorned with golden patterns reminiscent of those seen on the Goddess which had been washed away when she and Axilya fell in the ocean, indicating it is somehow connected. The goddess cast create or destroy water to wash away the golden patterns on the shapeshifter’s vessel aka Vionie and in return they managed to retrieve Jhon doe his cloak for the goddess.

**Ashborne and Meeting with Falner:** Upon having been teleported out of the vault by Vionie, the party perceives smoke rising from Farrah's mountain, particularly from the Temple of Ayul. They journey to Ashborne, a city of medieval appearance and significance, being one of the oldest cities to survive the world's destruction. The city is bustling, ruled by dragonborn. The city holds a statue of Neelia, and the party learns about the Naciar family and their connection to Falner. Falner also joins the party here as a “replacement” of Axilya and mostly because he also wants to find the goddess of conflict.

**Fang Lake (Dashing Dawson's Quest):** The party reaches Fang Lake, a stunning but eerie body of water, where they encounter horrifying crab-like humanoids. A battle ensues, with the party emerging victorious. Upon securing the artifact known as the Protector's Blade, Dashing Dawson appears, giving them the location of the Tower of Wivvil and immediately taking the artifact with him of course.

**Tower of Wyvill:** The party must pass Wyvill’s test to enter the tower, which involves following a magical light that accelerates time around them. Inside, they find an enormous library managed by Wyvill, a snarky and slightly condescending host who values knowledge above all. The library is filled with vast amounts of information, and destroying any knowledge within results in its fading from the world.

**Return to Ashborne:** On their return, the party finds Ashborne under siege by a massive Torva army. The city is burning, but the statue of Neelia miraculously survives. The Naciar family is slain by a red-haired woman after they attempt to destroy the statue. Falen intervenes, fails, and then mysteriously vanishes with the red-haired woman. A cursed version of Cedric's advertisement song continues to play from a shop as Falner prays to the Goddess of Conflict before the party decides to leave for Dhanmar.

**Dhanmar:** At sunrise, the party arrives at the massive city of Dhanmar, built into cliffs and surrounded by thick red stone walls. Water flows through the city, creating waterfalls and filling cisterns. They descend the cliff to the city's gates, passing through a checkpoint where merchants are being inspected by city guards. The city is vast. The session ends with them seeing a poster for missing Estran’s, them going to the location of the poster (Dhanmar’s tranquillity inn) and getting gassed there with all of them unconscious.
