# Arc 1: Festival of Lights

## Sessions Recap

### **Session 1**

**The Calm Before the Storm:** The session begins with the characters completing their final trial to take their place next of their goddess. They retire to their rooms, reflecting on their roles in the peaceful land of Estra, a serene place with minimal crime and home to the only mortals on this plane. The night progresses quietly until a sudden disturbance draws their attention.

**Midnight Visit**: The tranquility is broken by a hurried figure in the hallway, revealed to be the goddess. The goddess, using a unique sign language based on spell incantations, communicates urgency to Axilya and Cedric, who understand her. Methe, however, struggles with the signs. The goddess beckons them to follow her, leading them up a winding spiral staircase to the aviary.

**Aviary Discovery:** The aviary, usually filled with the melodious songs of birds, is eerily silent. Upon arrival, they find all the songbirds dead. The scene is chilling, with no obvious cause of death, setting a mysterious and foreboding tone for the adventure. The session ends with the party grappling with this unsettling discovery.

### **Session 2**

**Investigation:** The session picks up with the investigation into the dead birds in the aviary. The players thoroughly examine the dead birds, finding no physical injuries or signs of poisoning. An arcana check reveals that the birds' life force was drained through magical means. The goddess, distressed, shares that she found them dead in the morning, although they were alive the previous day. This revelation deepens the mystery.

**Shadow Attack:** As the party descends the staircase from the aviary, they are suddenly confronted by a shadowy figure. The air grows colder, and the shadows coalesce into dark, menacing shapes that attack the party. These shadow creatures have the ability to sap the strength of those they touch, making them formidable foes. The battle is intense, with the players needing to protect the goddess while fending off the shadows. The session highlights the group's combat skills and their ability to work together under pressure. The shadows' ability to hide and reappear adds a layer of complexity, making the fight both challenging and engaging.

### **Session 3**

**Under Temple Exploration:** This session begins with the players exploring the mysterious under temple, adding a new layer of intrigue and danger to their adventure. The players navigate through long-forgotten spiral staircases, thick with dust from years of neglect. The descent is quiet, each step echoing ominously. They emerge into a vast cavern with a large hole in the centre, leading to nothing but sky and clouds. Chains hang from the ceiling above the hole, bolted securely but now empty. The atmosphere is eerie and filled with unanswered questions.

**Investigation:** The goddess explains that records indicate an ancient evil was once imprisoned here, but no details exist in the temple library. An investigation around the hole reveals deep claw marks, suggesting that whatever was held there had climbed out. The goddess is baffled, stating that it is impossible to climb the bottom of Estra, leaving everyone to ponder what kind of creature could escape such an imprisonment. The discovery that records of this creature are missing adds to the mystery.

**Claw Mark Trail:** Further investigation reveals a trail of claw marks leading from the hole to the edge of the island, indicating the creature's escape route. This trail is a grim reminder of the ancient evil now potentially loose in the world. The goddess, worried about the implications, suggests they return before the attendants discover their absence.

**Return and Duties:** Back in their rooms, the players get only a few hours of sleep before being woken by attendants. It’s time for their first official duties as guardians of the goddess. They inspect preparations for the Festival of Lights, a vibrant celebration in the temple square. They move through the bustling temple square, ensuring everything is in order, from the bard’s college to the magician’s workshop, where floating lanterns are being prepared. These lanterns, representing those lost in the great cataclysm, are intricate and beautiful, each handmade with a unique touch.

**Festival Preparations:** The players oversee various preparations, ensuring every detail is perfect for the festival. They visit the caterers, taste-test delicious cakes, inspect beautiful banners in the textile district, and finally, meet Percefony, a tall, smartly dressed half-orc in charge of the festival's layout. She outlines the stage setup and security arrangements, emphasizing the importance of their roles. The session concludes with a sense of anticipation and responsibility as the players prepare for the festival.

### **Session 4**

**Introduction and Choices:** The session begins with the party having multiple options on where to go next. The surroundings include the temple library, the temple guard armory and barracks, and the dorms of the attendants. The goddess had suggested visiting the temple library to uncover more information about the under-temple, but the party is free to choose their own path.

**Visit to the Barracks:** The party decides to visit the barracks first. Upon entering, they encounter a bustling environment reminiscent of a police precinct. A gnome man named Adgrin Owith, wearing a quokka mask, greets them enthusiastically. Despite his flustered reaction, he offers to show them the training grounds. The party inspects the training grounds, witnessing recruits practicing archery and sword drills. After completing their inspection, they leave Adgrin Owith behind and proceed to the library.

**Temple Library Exploration:** The temple library is an imposing eleven-story tower with smooth stone walls and blue glass windows. Known for its serene rooftop garden, the library is a repository of every book ever produced in Estra. Upon entering, the party is greeted by a veiled attendant named Louelle, who informs them that all secret texts are held in the temple palace, not in the library.

**Architectural History Section:** The party examines the architectural blueprints, discovering that the original prison cells under the main temple palace were moved to the guards' barracks. They notice a missing book in the sequence of architectural records (reference number 1100.7), which Louelle explains was destroyed in an accident. She directs them to a restorationist for potential repair.

**Mythology Section:** In this section, they uncover records about the old gods, particularly focusing on Torva, the conqueror and instigator of the great calamity. They learn about Torva's numerous attempts to infiltrate Estra and his ultimate banishment. The mythology records also reveal that the under-temple was discovered during a prison escape attempt by Torva’s converts, and it houses a naturally formed cave converted to imprison a child of Rayel.

**Encounter with the Restorationist:** The party visits a restorationist workshop outside the temple compound. A halfling woman named Haven, who is the assistant to Master Icedigger, attempts to restore the damaged book. Unfortunately, her efforts result in the book turning solidly bright blue, indicating failure. She apologizes profusely and suggests that her mentor, Master Icedigger, could potentially fix the book when he returns the next day.

**Conflict in the Hallway:** Back at the temple, the party finds Vixen, Axilya’s animal companion, in an aggressive standoff with a veiled attendant. The attendant insists that the party follows her to their fittings for ceremonial armor. They proceed to a mirrored room where a gnome woman fits them with exquisite white and gold ceremonial armor.

**Updates on the Shades:** During the fittings, Cordelia updates the party on the shades they encountered earlier. Scholars confirm the shades originated from the world below, drawn to the goddess’s purity. Cordelia reassures the party that the goddess will remain in prayer leading up to the Festival of Lights, urging them to avoid causing disturbances.

**Drunken Attendant Elya:** The party encounters Elya, an intoxicated attendant, who shares disjointed stories about the old guardians and the under-temple. She mentions a shapeshifting monster previously imprisoned in the under-temple, believed to be dead after throwing itself off the island.

**Mysterious Songbird Message:** The next morning, a songbird delivers a cryptic message: "They are not letting me leave you need to keep looking there is something here they don’t want us to know." The party decides to investigate further.

**Investigation of Elya’s Room:** The party heads to Elya’s room, finding it locked and booby-trapped. After triggering the trap and taking some electrical damage, they discover the room ransacked. Among the overturned furniture and broken bottles, they find burned books with notes mentioning Ayul, the force of death.

**Attempt to Reach the Goddess**: The party attempts to visit the goddess quarters but is blocked by guards. They then go downstairs to the prayer rooms and, in their search, they break the floor and water comes rushing down as they break the floor from the bathroom and they hear a scream from a fox veiled attendant. They explore the goddesses quarters and find the altar which after investigating it they find ingraved in the floor a symbol of a broken tower (Torva’s symbol).

**Consultation with Mentors:** Returning to the forest, the party navigates to the quokka clan's camp, where they are greeted with respect. The goddess's presence causes a stir, and she asks the clan members not to bow to her, emphasizing her humility. Kosu, the clan leader, addresses the goddess with deep reverence.

**The Festival of Lights:** The festival commences with the goddess calling for silence, supported by a nervous griffin attendant. The attendant delivers a heartfelt speech about remembrance, mourning, and celebration, honoring those lost in the great calamity. The goddess lights the first lantern with a Tiefling child, symbolizing hope and remembrance as other lanterns float upwards, creating a beautiful display of lights.

**Attack and Chaos:** The serene scene turns chaotic when an archer appears, aiming at the goddess. One of the party members heroically intercepts the arrow, but the situation escalates as the lanterns' lights turn pink, leading to the disintegration of the city's protective barrier. The island of Estra crumbles, and the party, along with the goddess, plummets into chaos. Estra falls, marking a dramatic and catastrophic end to the session .
